State football championship highlights upcoming week

With winter sports kicking Into full gear, one local school’s fall schedule has a little work left to do.

The Pleasant Valley Vikings (10-3), coming off a 31-12 win against Miramonte on Friday night, will now play for the state Division 5AA  championship against the Ramona High School Rams (10-5) of Riverside.

The Vikings will look for their third state championship Friday at 8 p.m. at El Camino College in Torrance.

Boys basketball

The week kicks off in boys basketball, with Oroville traveling to play East Nicolaus on Monday. Pleasant Valley travels to Redding to take on University Prep at 7:30 p.m., while Chico will host Woodcreek at 7 p.m.

In other Tuesday games, Durham travels to Mount Shasta, Red Bluff hosts Corning, Orland travels to Foothill, Casa Roble visits Las Plumas, Biggs is at Quincy and Trinity visits Los Molinos.

On Wednesday, Oroville, Paradise, Hamilton and Las Plumas all start playing in the Live Oak Invitational, which will conclude on Friday.

Biggs travels to play Paradise Adventist Academy on Wednesday night before it heads up to start the Mount Shasta tournament on Thursday. Durham will also be at that tournament.

But perhaps the biggest tournament this weekend will be in Gridley as the Bulldogs host their annual tournament. The Bulldogs open against Salesian College Preparatory, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Also, on Thursday, Pleasant Valley and Chico play at the Mel Good tournament in Yuba City. Both schools will play in that tournament through Saturday.

Orland opens play at the Cloverdale tournament, while Corning travels to the Central Valley tournament. Meanwhile, the Red Bluff Boys play in the Arcata tournament and Los Molinos is in the Maxwell Tournament.

Girls basketball

Girls’ basketball action starts Tuesday night with Durham at Mount Shasta, Trinity playing at Los Molinos, and Biggs traveling to Quincy. Other games on Tuesday include Las Plumas at Colusa, Wheatland at Gridley, Oroville at Sutter and Red Bluff at Corning.

Wednesday night’s action is headlined by Woodcreek traveling to take on Chico at 7:30 p.m. Red Bluff will also host University Prep that evening.

The annual Duard Millet Tournament also kicks off in Oroville on Wednesday night. Schools participating in that tournament include Oroville, Las Plumas, Los Molinos, Corning, Gridley and Orland.

On Thursday, defending Northern Section champion Pleasant Valley opens play at the Folsom tournament, which will run through Saturday. Durham will also tip off its annual tournament on Thursday, with Paradise being one of the participants.

Girls soccer

The local high school girls soccer action kicks off Tuesday with three games involving local schools. Corning travels to Live Oak, Los Molinos is at Gridley, and Hamilton plays at Willows.

On Wednesday, defending Northern Section champion Pleasant Valley will play at University Prep in a game featuring two of this section’s best programs.

Also on Wednesday, West Valley is at Red Bluff, Oroville travels to Hamilton, Bear River is at Gridley and Las Plumas is at Nevada Union.

Starting Thursday, the Vikings, Chico High and Red Bluff will all be at the Foothill tournament. In other games on Thursday, Colusa is at Corning, Los Molinos is at Kelseyville, Gridley is at Pierce, and Oroville is at Paradise.

On Friday, Corning begins the Colusa Soccer Tournament against River Valley, while Las Plumas plays U Prep in the Nevada Union Tournament.

Boys Soccer

The week’s action in boys soccer begins with a pair of games on Monday, with Los Molinos at Las Plumas and Orland at Yuba City. On Tuesday, Los Molinos travels to Paradise, and Hamilton is at Willows.

On Wednesday, Pleasant Valley plays at University Prep at 7 p.m. following the girls game between the two schools.

Also, on Wednesday, LP travels to play Nevada Union. Oroville will be at Hamilton and West Valley at Red Bluff. Then, on Thursday, Corning will play host to Colusa.

Starting Thursday, Hamilton and Paradise will play in the Red Bluff tournament, which Includes U Prep. Also on Thursday, Colusa is at Corning, Willows is at Williams Orland at Live Oak, and Gridley is at Pierce. Los Molinos will also travel to Kelseyville.

On Friday, Pleasant Valley hosts Lindhurst, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Women’s college basketball

On Thursday, the Chico State women’s basketball team travels to Sonoma State for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. The Wildcats will play at Cal State San Marcos on Saturday afternoon, starting at 1 p.m.

On Friday, Butte College starts a weekend tournament at Foothill College against Hartnell.

Men’s college basketball

On Wednesday, Butte College will host Yuba at 6 p.m. and will travel to Sequoia College on Saturday for a 3 p.m. start.

The Chico State men will also travel to Sonoma State for a 7:30 p.m. start, and then on Saturday, they will play at San Marcos starting at 3 p.m.
