Ruben Amorim has a €10m release clause at Sporting Lisbon, which Manchester United have already agreed to pay.
He is expected to fly to Manchester this week to finalise his move to Old Trafford.
Whether he will be in charge for United’s game against Chelsea on Sunday is unknown.
Negotiations have slowed, as the 39-year-old wants to bring his coaching staff from Portugal with him.

Ruben Amorim has arrived at training as normal this morning, meaning the deal is still being sorted.
A Bola report that Sporting want the Red Devils to pay an extra €5m to release the manager’s technical staff with him.
United CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth are in Lisbon to reach an agreement.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas is the main antagonist in the way of the move right now.
The Portuguese side can keep Amorim for 30 days even after a club activates his release clause.
Varandas is negotiating with United to cancel this period but he wants a significant payment for this to happen.

Amorim maintains great respect for the Portuguese giants, and has displayed his professionalism by fulfilling his duties until the very end.
Speaking yesterday, he explained that he was fully focused on their upcoming game on Friday.
‘I can’t promise anything. What I know is that I will be at training tomorrow and I will prepare for the game against Estrela da Amadora,’ he said.
He does not want to leave Sporting in a bad state, which is why he waited until they had a replacement coach lined up for him before he accepted United’s contract offer.
Sporting are expected to make former player Joao Pereira their manager after Amorim departs.
