Nigerian music star, Innocent ‘2Face’ Idibia has found himself at the center of controversy once again after confirming his separation from wife Annie Macaulay-Idibia via social media on Sunday.
The announcement, which came as a shock to fans of the couple, marked another dramatic turn in their decades-long relationship that has consistently captured public attention.
“Hello to my beautiful people of all federations. Well, this thing I have to say is short but also long… Annie Macaulay and I have been separated for a while now and have currently filed for divorce,” wrote the singer who now prefers to be called 2Baba.
“I will grant a press release soon to say my story, not because it is anyone’s right to know about my personal life, but because I love my people and I need them to know my innocence or offense. Stay blessed my people. I love you all.”
Annie and 2Baba have been together for over two decades.
They met when she was 15 years old and married in Dubai in 2013. They have two children together.
2Baba’s announcement of their divorce came less than three years after the singer publicly apologised to his wife for the emotional distress he had caused throughout their relationship.
Sharing a video of fans dancing to his hit song “Implication” in August 2022, the singer apologised to Annie for the “embarrassment and hurt” he inflicted on her and called the actress a “scarce beauty” and “a strong African Queen.”
He wrote in an Instagram post: “Bless you @annieidibia. I will forever be grateful to you. Sorry for all the embarrassment and hurt I’ve put you through. You are a scarce beauty, a strong African Queen.
“I’ve been a star for so long that my bulletproof vest is worn-out. I’m not quitting or suicidal or giving up. I want to go back to my default settings and denounce my role model status and make up for lost time with my kids and give you all music that will make you remember and understand why they call me 2Baba.”
The apology followed the release of a music video titled “Smile,” dedicated to Annie, where the 49-year-old reaffirmed his love and commitment to the 40-year-old actress.
This wasn’t the first public display of affection; Annie was featured in his 2004 music video “African Queen,” which was a tribute to African women.
However, the reconciliation efforts appear short-lived.
On Sunday, 2Baba confirmed his separation from Annie in a video posted on Instagram after his previous posts announcing their marital crisis were deleted.
Despite an initial claim of a hacked account, 2Face later confirmed the separation.
The couple’s relationship has faced numerous challenges.
In 2021, Annie removed 2Face’s surname from her Instagram bio, thereby fueling speculation of marital crisis. She later reinstated it.
The actress had publicly accused 2Face of maintaining inappropriate ties with his first baby mama, Pero Adeniyi, who has three children with him.
She once accused 2Face of spending nights at Pero’s home under the guise of visiting their children. She also accused his family members of not accepting her, with his brother, Hyacinth Idibia, facing criticism for allegedly housing 2Face and Pero under the same roof.
2Baba had previously spoken about why he chose Annie as his wife, despite having children with other women.
He once said, “When I used to repeat just three sets of clothes, she would always hold my head, look me in the eyes, and tell me things will be fine one day. When I wasn’t handsome, she would call me her prince charming. When I wasn’t celebrated, she called me her king and said she is my number one fan and to this day, she still is.
“Even when I made it big as a musician and started misbehaving and controversies almost destroyed my career, she would go down on her knees and pray to God to show me the way and give me victory over my enemies.
“Now if am still that small boy struggling to make it like every other young chap on the streets of Lagos, do you think a doctor, a lawyer, and a multi-millionaire businesswoman would want to look at me or even have my kids? No.
“So to answer your question, I did not choose who had more to offer me, I chose Annie because she offered me her all when we had very little.”
