Smoke as a character made his debut appearance in Mortal Kombat 2, but he only has a handful of playable appearances throughout the series. Excluding the bizarre Triborg situation from Mortal Kombat X, Smoke was only playable in Mortal Kombat 9 throughout the MK9 through MK11 trilogy, before the timeline was reset by Liu Kang.
Much has changed for Smoke going into this new timeline. His smoke powers are no longer the result of an innate ability unique to him. Instead, he utilizes tricks and gadgets to simulate the smokescreens that he’s known for.
Smoke’s arcade ending for Mortal Kombat 9 revealed him to be a demonic entity known as “Enenra.” While this was very briefly touched upon in Mortal Kombat X’s story, this plot element ultimately went nowhere.
As such, Smoke in the new timeline is simply known as Tomas Vrbada. He is the adoptive brother of Kuai Liang and Bi-Han, but Bi-Han’s betrayal has resulted in him renouncing the ways of the Lin Kuei and join the ranks of the Shirai Ryu alongside Kuai Liang.
Different from how Smoke is sporting short hair in Mortal Kombat 1, the Mortal Kombat 9 version of Smoke has extensively long hair that reaches to his back. Needless to say, it’s Smoke’s main way of standing out from the rest of the “ninja characters” of Mortal Kombat 9.
The new Mortal Kombat 9 skin can be acquired for 500 Dragon Crystals in Mortal Kombat 1. There are a total of six different pallets for this skin.
