The saga of Erik ten Hag and Manchester United’s “will he or won’t he be sacked” back and forth is finally over, with the Dutchman being relieved of duties last Monday.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has stepped up to take the reigns in the interim until Ruben Amorim takes his seat as permanent manager next Monday.
However, the lengthy decisions which saw the sacking of ten Hag become a drawn-out process may have done more damage at Manchester United than we first realised.
The Daily Mail has reported that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is furious with Dan Ashworth and Sir Dave Brailsford for “insisting they stuck with Erik ten Hag in the summer”.
The implications of sticking with Erik ten Hag for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Manchester United
The implications of sticking with him have been extremely costly, with his renewed contract costing the club £17.5 million in compensation for ultimately sacking him when it could have cost them £10 million.

Not to mention the £200 million that was spent on players to fit into ten Hag’s system that may not work with Ruben Amorim’s play style.
And with regards to Amorim, the Portuguese manager is bringing with him most of his backroom staff, looking to replace the current set-up that was assembled in the summer to work with ten Hag.
Further to this, United have also had to pay compensation to Sporting to buy the coaching staff out of their contracts with a reduced notice period, costing £9 million including the compensation and release clause for Amorim himself.
Not only has this caused a huge financial impact for the club, when the INEOS owner has been making drastic decisions to save money such as cutting Sir Alex Ferguson’s contract, however has also created a feeling of instability in the club with routine turnover of staff.
Whilst Amorim is creating a buzz as the new permanent manager, with a lot of excitement for his arrival, the Portuguese manager has a long road ahead to restore United to its former heights.
