Sir Jim Ratcliffe challenged over Manchester United stadium plans

Plans by Manchester United co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, for a new stadium at Old Trafford have been challenged by critics.

The Ineos chairman has long pushed for a fresh start rather than redeveloping Old Trafford, with the current stadium set to down-scale to the United Women’s new home grounds.

The proposed 100,000 seater has already received backlash from United fans since its plans were unveiled, but more recent development has led to more criticism from all angles.

The criticism delivered by die-hard United fan group The 1958 centred around the big top-like appearance of the newly proposed stadium, and how it failed to reflect the values and culture of Manchester’s working population.

Despite this, United have publicly stated that the project would have the potential to deliver £7.3 billion per year to the UK economy, and potentially create up to 92,000 new jobs.

It has been previously reported by Centre Devils that the 5-year project is estimated to cost £2 billion, and so financing the build becomes the next bridge to cross, and Ratcliffe’s proposed source of funding has not been met with open arms.

According to The Guardian, “Jim Ratcliffe, the co-owner of Manchester United, has been challenged over the proposed use of hundreds of millions of pounds of public funds to deliver his vision of building the “world’s greatest stadium”.”

Given Ratcliffe’s vastly deep pockets, most critics have been left puzzled as to why the now-Monaco-resident need use public funds for the project; funds that could be invested elsewhere into Manchester’s infrastructure.

Undeniably, if and when the new stadium is built, it will represent a new era for United football and become a source of profound growth for Old Trafford and Greater Manchester.
