Amid the nationwide protest against hunger and an end to bad governance, the Lagos State Government has urged protesters to shun violence and respect the sanctity of physical structures in the state.
The call was made on Friday by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide in Alausa
Olumide, who reinforced the position of the state government that the situation called for sober reflection instead of protest, given the efforts of government at all levels to bring succour to the people, said that protesters should refrain from destroying physical structures that are meant to serve residential, commercial and institutional needs of the people.
He said: “Rather than violence and destruction, this period calls for everyone to be circumspect and particularly respect the sanctity of buildings, considering the values attached to them, the high cost of erecting them and their important functions in the society, including their accommodation and aesthetic values.”
The commissioner noted that physical structures across the state added to the alluring landscape of Lagos and helped project her cultural heritage.
He noted that all hands must be on deck to build a livable, organised, orderly, and sustainable physical environment.
The protest, which was violence-free on Thursday and Friday in the state, is expected to end on the 10th of August.
Meanwhile, operatives of security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), Lagos Neighbourhood and Safety Corps (LNSC) and the military, have shown a high level of professionalism in managing the protest.
At the protest ground in Ojota on Friday, police officers distributed bottled water to protesters, a show of solidarity.
