SAN JOSE – The Sharks allowed a go-ahead power-play goal to Robert Thomas early in the second period and couldn’t find the equalizer in what became a 3-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.
With the Sharks trying to kill a holding penalty to Timo Meier, Thomas took a pass from Vladimir Tarasenko and snapped it past goalie James Reimer for his 20th goal of the season and a 2-1 Blues lead just 31 seconds into the second period.
The Sharks went without a shot on goal for the first 10 minutes of the second period and finished with 21 for the game, as they had to kill five minor penalties.
Noah Gregor scored the Sharks’ only goal at the 3:05 mark of the first period and Reimer finished with 25 saves, as San Jose lost for the 11th time in 12 games.
Dakota Joshua also scored for St. Louis, which is now 12-0-2 since a 7-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on March 26. The Blues remain tied with the Minnesota Wild for second place in the Central Division.
The Blues and Sharks were tied 1-1 after the first period, as Balcers set up Gregor for his sixth goal of the season.
Balcers had the puck on his stick near the Sharks’ blue line before he lofted it toward the Blues’ zone. Gregor skated into it and beat Blues goalie Jordan Binnington between the legs just 3:05 into the first period.
The Blues, who entered Thursday on a 13-game point streak, got that goal back as Joshua found some space in the Sharks’ slot, took a pass from Logan Brown and beat Reimer for his third goal of the season.
The Sharks ended a 10-game losing streak Tuesday with a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Scott Reedy scored twice and Balcers scored for the third time in four games.
The Sharks host the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday and travel to play the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday.
The Sharks finish the season next week with their final home game on Tuesday against Anaheim, followed by road games in Edmonton and Seattle on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
