Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of Dimeji Ajibola, a movie director and editor in the 2023 Nigerian crime thriller series, Shanty Town.
His death was announced by his fellow industry colleagues, including actor Bolanle Ninalowo, filmmaker Uzee Usman, and Shanty Town producer Chinenye Nworah on Sunday. The cause of his death was not revealed.
Nworah wrote on social media, “Goodnight, my brother Dimeji Ajibola. Dimeji, I don’t know what to write.”
Similarly, Ninalowo, a close friend of Dimeji wrote, “I love you, brother, and I miss you, Dimeji Ajibola. May God heal your family and loved ones. Till we meet again, didi dox, rest on the champ.”
Ajibola was a known figure in Nigeria’s film and advertising industries, with a career that spanned more than 18 years.
He started as an animator and made a name for himself by bringing techniques and insights accessible only from international markets to the Nigerian creative space.
He trained and used his skills in filmmaking and cinematography at the New York Film Academy, character animation at Animation Mentor in San Francisco, and visual effects at VFXLearning.
As CEO and Technical Director of Flipsyde Studios Ltd., Ajibola earned a reputation for producing cutting-edge work across film, animation, visual effects (VFX), and interactive media.
His creative achievements include campaigns for MTN and Coca-Cola.
In 2012, Ajibola’s Hoodrush, Nigeria’s first urban musical film, won Best Movie at the Green Me Film Festival in Germany and swept multiple Nollywood awards, including Best Actor and Best Soundtrack.
His 2017 film Ovy’s Voice became the highest-ranked movie on Iroko TV.
Ajibola’s other works include comedy sci-fi, Passport (2022), Ratnik (2020), and the 2023 crime series, Slum King.
