SF Giants acquire promising young starter from Chicago Cubs

QUEENS, New York — The San Francisco Giants have reportedly added to their stable of pitching depth, with an upcoming spot in the rotation currently vacant after Alex Cobb suffered a mild groin strain earlier this week.

The newest addition is 26-year-old right-hander Cory Abbott, whom the Giants acquired from the Chicago Cubs Thursday in exchange for cash considerations, according to multiple reports. Bally Sports’ Russell Dorsey was the first to report the news of the trade, while FanSided’s Robert Murray reported the return. The Giants have yet to officially announce the move.

Abbott, the 67th overall pick in 2017 out of Loyola Marymount, appeared in seven games for the Cubs last season, including one start, with a 6.75 ERA. Throughout his minor-league career, however, Abbott has served exclusively as a starter with a track record of success, with a 3.65 ERA over 74 minor-league starts.

Abbott was on Chicago’s 40-man roster, which means the Giants will have to make a corresponding move to add him to theirs. Abbott has two options years remaining, so he could be destined for Triple-A Sacramento. However, Abbott also gives the Giants another option to fill the spot in the rotation vacated by Cobb, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right groin strain.

After getting a cup of coffee with Chicago last season, Abbott started this year at Triple-A and had made two starts, allowing three earned runs over six innings for the Iowa Cubs.

Abbott, who pairs a sinking low-90s fastball with a late-breaking slider that sits in the mid-80s, was considered the Cubs’ No. 22 prospect by Baseball America at the start of this season. He had ranked as high as No. 8 in Chicago’s system in Baseball America’s 2019 rankings, and the publication named his slider the best in the Cubs organization in 2020 and 2021.

He has struck out at least 9.8 batters per nine innings at every level he has appeared at in the pros, with control that Baseball America also named the best among Cubs prospects entering the 2019 season.
