Manchester United continue to chase a new midfielder despite pursuing Manuel Ugarte in the summer.
Ruben Amorim’s process of rebuilding his squad will come with the focus of strengthening the midfield department, with Scott McTominay having departed the club last summer.
Casemiro is still also likely to leave the club in the summer, despite his brilliant performances of late.
United have been linked with several midfielders over the year – Sander Berge was a potential acquisition albeit the Norwegian went on to join Fulham.
The failed pursuit of Frenkie De Jong under the tenure of Erik Ten Hag has led the club to pursue alternative targets across Europe.
One star from Serie A in particular, has caught the eye of United’s scouts.

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg has confirmed the clubs interest in Atalanta midfielder, Ederson.
“The club is looking for reinforcement in his position, possibly as early as the winter transfer window,” Plettenberg stated on his X account.
The 25-year-old was strongly linked to join the Red Devils before the start of the 2024/25 season.
It’s claimed that United have ‘excellent relations’ with Atalanta and talks are expected to be resurrected in the coming months.
Ten Hag proceeded to go through with the purchase of Manuel Ugarte instead, but there remains a strong possibility for Ederson to join the club in the January window.
The Brazilian predominantly features in central midfield, as part of a double pivot.

It therefore comes as very little surprise that United are in talks with Ederson, considering the need for improvement in the physical flooring of the squad.
The 25-year-old currently has a contract with Atalanta until 2027, meaning the Serie A club will likely demand a sizable fee.
The likelihood of the Brazilian joining remains one to keep an eye on over the winter period.
United will certainly be busy in outgoings and incomings, as the Amorim era takes centerstage.
As of now, United remain in talks with Ederson, and the deal is expected to be wrapped up ahead of the new year.
