The Nigerian Senate has declared a state of emergency on the Calabar – Odukpani – Itu – Ikot Ekpene Federal Highway following persistent delays and slow progress on the project.

Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, representing Cross River South Senatorial District, revealed this after a joint Senate and House of Representatives inspection tour on October 3rd and 4th.

Senator Ekpenyong, who had moved a motion of national importance on November 20, 2024, drawing attention to the highway’s poor development, said the inspection left the committee disappointed. He stated, “The Joint National Assembly committee officially declared a state of emergency on this very important road and will be initiating a Joint Committee Public hearing with a view to resolving this crisis.”

The highway serves as a critical commercial route for the movement of passengers and goods, including agricultural, construction, and petroleum products across the South South region. Ekpenyong warned of increased pressure on the road during the upcoming Christmas season, making urgent intervention essential.

Expressing gratitude, the federal legislator thanked President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to infrastructure development, urging sustained focus on the corridor. He also acknowledged the leadership of the Senate President and National Assembly, as well as the support of Governors Bassey Otu and Umo Eno during the committee’s visit.

Highlighting the importance of legislative oversight, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong reiterated, “This exercise underscores the importance of legislative oversight, a key function of the National Assembly that ensures accountability, transparency, and the effective implementation of government projects for the benefit of all Nigerians.”
