Job Description
You will be Developing, maintaining updating and communicating all legal and operational policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines relevant to the area of responsibility, ensuring that safety, health and environmental targets are set and achieved by ensuring high personal integrity on safety as a core value as well as understanding and applying the safety Management system.
More of your responsibilities will include:
Holding the legal appointment in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act, No. 29 of 1996 Regulation 2.6.1 as an appointed Subordinate Manager to assist the Mining Manager appointed in terms of Section 3(1) of the MHSA in the carrying out of their duties and responsibilities within your area of responsibility.
Coordinating and hosting inspectorate/ DMRE and visitors as well as chair SHE accident/ incident investigations
Ensuring effective contractor management and effective planning and rehabilitation of mined areas
Creating and implementing agreed upon operational planning and production targets, ensuring that integrated operational plans are designed and are practical and executable and supports business strategy
Ensuring that costs allocated for sections / shafts within the operation are controlled within the prescribed budget and compares with internationally accepted benchmarks and effective cost saving methods
Effective optimisation and asset optimisation of Operational Capabilities through improving standards, support the implementation of new mining methods / technologies and improvement in production, planning and safety
Effectively manage underperforming sections / shafts and optimise machinery and equipment
Effective people management meaning all roles are well defined and clarified and that competencies and learning paths are developed to human capacity and capability
Evaluating requirements of departmental staff, ensure that individuals are provided with the correct development opportunities, evaluate training courses as well as oversee the development of training material
This role is in the Mining department at Band 6 and reports to the Mining Manager.
Qualifications
Degree / BSc in Mining Engineering (NQF 7)
Mine managers certificate of competency (Mandatory)
Registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (advantageous)
Registered with the SA Colliery Managers Association
Management Development Programme or the equivalent would be advantageous
Experience
2 years’ experience at section manager level or acting as section manager
Extensive experience in the Underground Coal Mining Environment
Experience in assessing management principles around mining and related equipment and associated operational standards and philosophies
Safety Leadership Program
Valid driver’s licence
