In a remarkable opportunity for aspiring writers, the Seattle Public Library is now accepting applications for its highly sought-after Eulalie and Carlo Scandiuzzi Writers’ Room Residency program. This unique program provides selected writers with a dedicated space to work on their projects, tapping into the rich resources and inspiring ambiance of the library.
Writers interested in becoming residents for the upcoming year are encouraged to submit their applications by Friday, December 22, 2023. The residency aims to offer writers a supportive community while providing access to the extensive collections and research assistance available at the Central Library.
In 2023, the program hosted 31 residents representing diverse fields and genres. The Writers’ Room has proven to be an invaluable resource for these writers, offering benefits such as a dedicated writing space with a panoramic view of downtown Seattle and proximity to reference librarians, Special Collections, and other critical resources.
One success story from the Writers’ Room is Morgan Richter, who utilized the space to power through the first draft of her second book, securing a two-book deal with Knopf Doubleday. Another resident, Amontaine Aurore, praised the vast resources of the library for supporting her research needs and contributing to a productive year for her novel.
To showcase the talents and achievements of the 2023 residents, the public is invited to attend a special Writers’ Room Showcase on Sunday, December 17, at the Central Library.
Applications for the 2024 Writers’ Room cohort will be accepted until December 22, 2023. Interested writers can apply online at There is no application fee. Accepted residents for 2024 will have access to the Writers’ Room during the library’s open hours through December 20, 2024, committing to using the space several days per month.
The library looks for applicants who are currently pursuing a defined writing project, plan to utilize the Central Library’s collections and resources, connect with the residency’s goal of fostering a supportive writing community, and can benefit from the Writers’ Room in overcoming challenges in their projects.
Situated on Level 9 of the Central Library, the Eulalie and Carlo Scandiuzzi Writers’ Room is a contemporary, light-filled space adorned with large windows providing a breathtaking view of downtown Seattle. The room boasts six writing desks, each thoughtfully equipped with an adjustable chair, light, and outlet. Access to the room is secured through a key code, ensuring exclusivity for the selected residents. The Writers’ Room is available during the library’s open hours, providing a conducive environment for focused and productive writing.
