At the recently concluded Global Entrepreneurship Festival (GEF) held in Akure from November 22nd to 24th, 2024, Sean Ilenrey captivated the audience as a key speaker on the third day, dedicated to the theme of “LeadHERship.” Known for his remarkable journey from a homeless high school dropout to an award-winning executive, Sean’s message focused on women’s leadership, relationship-building, and his unique leadership philosophy, “Value-Centric Leadership.”
During his appearance on the “LeadHERship Experience Panel,” Sean discussed the vital role of nurturing relationships for effective leadership. He shared insights from his leadership development book, You Don’t Owe Happiness, emphasizing how leaders should not focus on chasing the emotions of their teams. Instead, leaders should ensure their teams feel valued and valuable.
“Leadership is not being a boss. Leadership is not telling people what to do. Leadership is sacrifice. When you look at a pyramid, turn it upside down and you’re at the bottom. Because you’re carrying the weight of the entire team,” Sean explained, reminding the audience of the importance of putting others first.
He also broke down the term “LeadHERship,” explaining it as “Serving & Guiding via Women through the power of Relationships.” Sean highlighted that cultivating and nurturing relationships is key to leadership success, especially in empowering women. He further added, “Leaders must still hold their teams accountable through coaching. Being a servant leader doesn’t mean being a ‘yes man’.”
In a deeply personal reflection, Sean shared how his mother’s battle with kidney failure drove him to turn his life around. From being a homeless dropout, Sean went on to become a corporate executive in less than ten years to support her. He spoke emotionally about how her passing inspired him to use his leadership to uplift other entrepreneurs. “I couldn’t fully give her the life she deserved, but through my leadership, I’m hopeful that I can help change the lives of others,” Sean said.
Sean’s speech at the GEF not only highlighted his leadership philosophy but also showcased his passion for helping others achieve personal success. As an executive, speaker, and author of “You Don’t Owe Happiness”, Sean’s life journey is an inspiration to others especially those who have given up on what they can be in the future and to those who strive for growth and empowerment in their careers. Through his work and speeches, he advocates for the power of feeling valued, offering practical advice for professionals to build their personal brands and reach their full potential.
His presence at the GEF was a strong hold on a reminder that Sean is a maestro in his craft. A transformative power of leadership rooted in empathy, sacrifice, and building meaningful relationships.
