Job Summary
News24 is seeking an innovative journalist intern to join our climate desk in Cape Town for a two-year period. The successful candidate needs to express a keen interest in science reporting and understand the significance of the climate crisis and communicate that through various forms of storytelling.
The successful candidate must be willing to work irregular hours and overtime. Travel may be required.
The internship programme is a collaboration between the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement, a business unit of the National Research Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), South African National Editor’s Forum (SANEF) and News24.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Identify and develop news stories;
- Do extensive research, conduct interviews and verify information.
- Review new research on climate change and the environment.
- Write articles and deliver stories within tight deadlines.
- Maintain an expanded and excellent contact network.
- Work with colleagues on special projects.
- Be willing to do participate in additional training programmes.
Qualifications and Skills
- Degree or diploma in journalism, media or a related field;
- A proven interest in climate change, science and environmental reporting;
- Basics in photography and shooting video to incorporate multimedia in stories;
- Computer literate
- Able to work Monday to Friday;
- Excellent command of the English language and fluent in one or more South African languages.
- Ability to work comfortably under pressure and in an online news environment;
- Self-motivated and have organisational and planning skills.
- A valid drivers’ licence
- A passport
