San Jose Sharks sign Justin Bailey, place Filip Zadina on IR

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks on Monday signed forward Justin Bailey to a one-year, two-way contract,  and added him to their 23-man roster, and placed winger Filip Zadina on injured reserve.

Bailey was with the Sharks on Monday morning and will be available to play against the Washington Capitals at SAP Center.

Zadina had been considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury as he missed Saturday’s game with the Vancouver Canucks. Zadina, per Sharks coach David Quinn, had been dealing with the injury for some time before he left Friday’s game with the Montreal Canadiens after one period.

Zadina had three goals and two assists in 20 and was averaging 14:00 of ice time per game, and his plus-minus rating was an unsightly -19 mark.

“Under the circumstances, he’s done a really good job,” Quinn said of Zadina on Saturday. “I think every player is trying to find out what they’re going to be in the National Hockey League. No matter how old you are, as your career goes on from year to year, you’re trying to figure out who you’re going to be at this level and what’s going to allow you to have a long, successful career. And I think at his age he’s still figuring that out.”

Per CapFriendly, Bailey’s contract is worth $750,000 at the NHL level, and $300,000 in the AHL.

Bailey, 28, came to San Jose this fall on a professional tryout and earned an American Hockey League contract after a strong training camp which included one goal in three preseason. Prior to this week, Bailey led the Barracuda with six goals and was second on the team with 11 points.

Bailey’s last NHL game came on Jan. 27, 2022, when he was with the Vancouver Camucks. Bailey has nine points in 82 career NHL games over a nine-year professional career that also includes stops with the Philadelphia Flyers and Buffalo Sabres.

Bailey was with the Bakersfield Condors, the AHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, and had 32 points in 58 games.
