Ryu missed out on being ranked as one of Capcom’s most popular characters by a single vote

Fighting games did fare better in favorite series category at least

Capcom’s house of iconic characters is probably second to only Nintendo in the realm of video games, and apparently not everyone can make the top cut regarding who is the most beloved.

The storied developer recently released the full, exhaustive results of their big Super Elections campaign, where over 250,000 people voted on their favorite Capcom characters and games of all time.

We previously took a look at the Capcom games fans most want sequels and reboots to, so now we’re back to view the above mentioned topics, which aren’t as favorable to the fighting games at first glance.

When looking at the total votes from across the world, there’s not a single fighting game original character there in the top 10 surprisingly.

Instead, Dante, Leon, Mega Man X, Vergil and Zero make up the top 5 followed by Jill Valentine, Mega Man, Phoenix Wright, Dino Crisis Regina and Amaterasu.

Technically, all of them aside from Leon and Regina have appeared in fighting games like Marvel vs. Capcom, so that is something.

What’s extra shocking is that expanding out the results is that Ryu came in 11th overall, but that’s not all.

The Street Fighter poster child missed out on the top 10 by a single vote since Amaterasu received 5,963 while Ryu had 5,952.

When split into regions, Ryu did hit the top 10 (8th in Japan and 10th in the rest of the world), but an apparent push by Japanese Okami fans bumped their favorite Clover deity up just enough.

Breaking it down further by character gender, both Ryu and Ken managed to rank on those for the men, but the ladies did even better.

Chun-Li topped the female vote in Japan with Cammy, Juri, Sakura and even Akira Kazama (in Japan at least) hit the top 10.

Capcom did provide the full results for the characters going all the way out to 867th place for a bunch who only received a singular vote, so there’s plenty more fighters to be found on the list.

As for the top 50 Capcom characters overall, we saw that Ryu was 11th, Chun-Li at 15, Morrigan at 18, Ken at 19, Akuma at 23, Cammy was 26, Juri was 29, Sakura at 32, Felicia at 37, Zangief at 41, Hsien-Ko at 45, and Guile at 50.

Moving on to the top-voted fan favorite Capcom games, we saw some very similar results with Devil May Cry 5 actually leading the pack after Dante won the character rank, so it looks like that was very successful in reinvigorating the fan base for the series after the divided reception of the reboot.

DMC was followed by Dino Crisis (with their fans making a big push to be seen in this campaign), Resident Evil 4 Remake, Devil May Cry 3 and Okami rounding out the top 5.

Again no fighting games here, but when looking at just Japan’s rankings, they did vote Street Fighter 6 as their 5th overall pick with some other unique inclusions like Breath of Fire 3, Mega Man Legends and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.

Also like the characters, fighting games did fare a lot better when taking a step back beyond that top 10.

Looking at the wider range of results going to the top 100, Street Fighter 6 came in at 12th place in the world, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike at 24th, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 at 27, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at 28, Rival Schools at 39, Darkstalkers 3 at 44, Ultra Street Fighter 4 at 51, Capcom vs. SNK 2 at 52, Darkstalkers at 59, Darkstalkers Resurrection at 60, Street Fighter Alpha 3 at 76, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo at 84, Darkstalkers Revenge at 86, Project Justice at 92, Power Stone 2 at 98 and Street Fighter 5 at 99 — so over 520 people still picked SF5 among their favorites of all time.

The favorite game series actually ended up being the most favorable to fighting games overall.

Street Fighter was ranked 7th in the world with over 10,000 votes (5th in Japan) while VS. Capcom made it there too at 9th with almost 7,600 (10th in Japan).

No Darkstalkers or Rival Schools here, but they did perform well on the sequel and reboot questions.

Are you surprised by these results? Did Ryu get snubbed by the Okami fans in Japan and Dino Crisis fans in the West? Were there any other notable exclusions that stand out to you?
