Ruud van Nistelrooy departed Manchester United two weeks ago today, after a short second stint at Old Trafford.
United recruited their legendary striker in the summer, returning him to his former club after 18 years away.
Van Nistelrooy joined alongside Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Andreas Georgson to form Erik ten Hag’s remodelled coaching team.
After a dismal eighth-place finish last season, United needed to change things around, with their new coaching line-up hoping to do just that.
However, a continued run of disappointing results led to United falling to 14th place in the Premier League, ultimately seeing ten Hag get the boot.
In his place, van Nistelrooy stepped up as interim manager until Ruben Amorim could start his new role as permanent head coach.
Van Nistelrooy managed the team for only four games, however, the work he did in this time was transformational in comparison to ten Hag’s performances.
The former striker managed the team to three wins and a draw, leaving the club unbeaten.
Whilst van Nistelrooy wanted to remain with the club, Amorim’s arrival with his existing backroom staff meant the Dutchman was being replaced.
Now without a club, van Nistelrooy is looking for his next challenge, potentially returning to Germany.
Life after Manchester United for Ruud van Nistelrooy
Ruud van Nistelrooy is now searching for his next post, however, his recent stint in charge of the Red Devils will have only improved his already impressive reputation.
Prior to joining United for the second time, the former striker was being linked with clubs like Burnley and Leicester, with the latter once more looking for a manager.
Van Nistelrooy has already applied to the post with Coventry City, being one of the managers to be shortlisted for the role.
However, Florian Plettenberg has now reported that the prolific goalscorer may be set for yet another homecoming.
Bundesliga 2 club Hamburger SV are now considering their former striker to be their new manager. The report explains that the club have discussed van Nistelrooy internally, with a real consideration to appoint the 48-year-old.
Van Nistelrooy joined Hamburger SV towards the end of his playing career as a free transfer from Real Madrid in 2010.
In the year and a half he was there, he made 44 appearances with 17 goals and three assists.
A return to Hamburger would be the third time van Nistelrooy has managed a former club, including PSV Eindhoven and United.
