Last month it was reported that Ruud van Nistelrooy was being looked at by newly promoted side Leicester to lead them through next year’s Premier League campaign.
The Dutchman has previously expressed a desire to manage in the leagues that he’s previously played in, saying: “I would really like to work in Spain, and I have had conversations with Spanish clubs. But also the other leagues in which I have played, I want to coach there too. In the Premier League, and the Bundesliga.”
This dream seemed to be edging closer with the United legend being linked to Leicester with their current manager set to move to Chelsea after their sacking of Mauricio Pochettino.
Van Nistelrooy’s experience from managing PSV Eindhoven where he managed to win the Dutch cup has seemed to be enough to convince others of his ability, with another club now reported as being close to appointing the Dutchman.
It’s been reported by De Telegraaf, that Burnley are in the advanced stages of appointing van Nistelrooy as manager at Turf Moor.
Having lost Vincent Kompany to the bright lights of Bayern Munich three weeks ago, the Championship team have been looking at possible replacements, considering Frank Lampard, Scott Parker, Liam Rosenior and Kompany’s former second in command, Craig Bellamy. Burnley are looking to return to the English Premier League after suffering relegation after their return to the top flight.
It’s expected that the deal to appoint van Nistelrooy will see a multi-year deal agreed, with a warm reception expected to his arrival at Turf Moor.
Burnley’s owner, Alan Page, has commented that he wants a big name in charge of the squad, with van Nistelrooy bringing this having had extremely successful seasons at PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United and Real Madrid, scoring an incredible 331 goals in 523 games, winning him a total of nine Golden Boot awards, four Supercup titles, two domestic cup titles and five league titles.
Not only a star on the pitch, but the Dutchman’s experiences as deputy to Guss Hiddink’s Dutch national squad allowed him to take some managerial experience into his time at PSV Eindhoven where the team won 34 of their 50 games under the United legend.
With a track record like this, and his impressive run in the Premier League as a player, Burnley are no doubt hoping that van Nistelrooy’s winning ways can be brought to Turf Moor.
