The Russian Orthodox Church has developed a plan to strengthen anti-terrorism measures at churches, against the background of increased terrorist plans in the past few months and the intensification of military activities.
“Letters have been sent out with detailed instructions to church rectors about having an alarm button in necessary cases, about meeting the requirements of a government decree that establishes the specifics of the anti-terrorist protection of religious buildings, Abbess Ksenia (Chernega), head of the Legal Department of the Moscow Patriarchate, told RTVI.
At the same time, there’s no need to create a security department for the Russian Church, the abbess said, as churches have, as a rule, their own guard, and some are protected by a private security organization.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, there were 1,651 terrorist crimes in Russia from January to June of this year, which is 38.4% more than in the same period last year, and the highest number over the past 18 years.
