Ruben Amorim is settling into his new role at Manchester United, with the Portuguese coach nearly two weeks into his tenure.
Amorim has begun getting to know the squad ahead of his first match in charge, seeing how his players perform in training and as part of his tactical plans.
United have now confirmed that he will have a modest budget to work with in the upcoming transfer windows. The club want Amorim to focus on harnessing the potential already in the squad rather than pursuing high-profile signings.
One key area Amorim is considering is the midfield, where he already has several strong options. The likes of Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, and Mason Mount form the foundation of the team’s creative and defensive play.
However, with the likely departures of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, United are losing some much-needed depth in their midfield. This is particularly concerning given the club’s recent struggles with a high number of injury woes.

As such, Amorim is now looking for cost-effective free agents to replace the experienced duo.
Ruben Amorim sets sights on Angel Gomes
According to The Sun, Amorim has identified Angel Gomes as a potential target for United, with the Lille midfielder’s contract set to expire next summer. This situation could allow United to strike a pre-contract agreement in January.
Gomes, who left Old Trafford in 2020, has previously spoken fondly of his time at the club, even admitting he has a “soft spot” for United.
Speaking last month about a potential homecoming, Gomes commented: “There’ll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course it’d be difficult to say no”.
This has given the Red Devils hope that the 23-year-old would seriously consider a return.
Since moving to Lille, Gomes has evolved into a versatile and creative midfielder, capable of playing a deeper role like Casemiro or acting as a more advanced playmaker akin to Eriksen.
Reports suggest that Amorim views Gomes as an ideal addition to strengthen United’s midfield.
With January approaching, United must decide whether to act quickly to secure the return of one of their former academy stars, or risk losing him to other interested clubs.
