The lineup Ruben Amorim put out against Rangers on Thursday night hinted strongly at Casemiro’s future at the club.
Christian Eriksen and Toby Collyer started in midfield behind Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho.
The bench Amorim had at his disposal included first-choice midfielders Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte, while Casemiro was left out again.
The Brazilian hasn’t played for United since the 2-0 loss to Newcastle United in late December.
That match was a poor showing for Casemiro, who struggled against Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes.

Since then, Casemiro has been linked with moves to Saudi Arabia and the MLS, but no transfer has materialised.
United could offload the 31-year-old to help address Premier League profitability and sustainability concerns.
With a contract until 2026, a summer move seems likely if no deal is struck before the January transfer window closes.
Amorim’s actions suggest he has already made up his mind regarding Casemiro’s role in the squad.
Toby Collyer’s inclusion marked his first Europa League start after impressing in previous league appearances.
The 19-year-old shone in cameo roles against Southampton and Brighton and during an Arsenal clash.

On Thursday, he delivered a mature and professional performance, earning a standing ovation in the 73rd minute.
Collyer’s emergence under Amorim highlights his quality, attitude, and readiness for the first-team stage.
Bruno Fernandes speaking to MUTV, heaped praise on Collyer for his professionalism and talent.
“Toby doesn’t need help, if I’m being honest. He is a great kid, a great example of a professional,” said Fernandes.
“He trains at the maximum level every time and knows his place but works hard to improve and take his chance.”
“He’s aggressive off and on the ball, class in tight spaces, and is only going to get better,” Fernandes added.
Collyer’s rise in stature further emphasises Casemiro’s diminishing role under Amorim’s system at United.
The Portuguese manager appears ready to approve Casemiro’s departure, whether in January or this summer.
