uben Amorim has completed his second week in the hotspot at Manchester United.
Today saw the manager take to his first press conference in charge of The Red Devils, fielding questions about his tactics, recruitment and even former managers.
When comparisons were made between Amorim and Jose Mourinho, Amorim commented: “First thing, not just on me but all the Portuguese coaches, he showed we can be the best in the world, from a small country.”
He continued: “But I am different from Mourinho. He was European champion and I am not. Football these days is different, and I think I am the right person for this moment.”
However, this isn’t the only interview Amorim has done, also meeting with Gary Neville.
Gary Neville comments on Casemiro and Marcus Rashford heading to the USA
Earlier this week, Neville made comments about Casemiro and Marcus Rashford’s recent trip to the USA during the international break. The former defender commented: “It’s been a very difficult period for the club and it’s been a very difficult period for Marcus Rashford.”
He continued: “There was a player I used to play with that used to say that when times were tough that basically you go down to that extra level of detail of making sure everything’s perfect, you take the butter off your toast, you’d literally make sure that you were absolutely looking at every little one per cent of detail that you could.
“I used to think standing in that tunnel, when going through a difficult time, I’d think: ‘Right I’ve got to work my way out of this, I’ve got to be absolutely perfect.’ Every drink, every sleep, every training session, every stretch, has just got to be absolutely perfect.
“So would I think the most relaxing way to spend your time, whether you’re Casemiro, and I’ll bring him into it, Casemiro is 30 odd years of age, Marcus Rashford is in his 20s, travelling 10 or 11 hours and I, to be fair, have done that quite a few times in the last few months, you get a bit of jet lag going to the US.
“So, a three, four-day jet lag-based trip, when you’ve got basically the idea of training and making sure you’re fit, I don’t personally think it’s the right choice of distance and choice of destination.”
With Amorim now the man in charge, Neville questioned how the Portuguese star felt about the pair’s travels and if he was comfortable with that.
Ruben Amorim gives his take on the USA trip
Being very clear about his thoughts Amorim responded: “Firstly, it was five days off. The second thing, they received the information of five days off and they are big boys. They have kids, they decide what to do.”
He continued: “I think the main question here is that us, as a club, have to set the standards and have to manage that. It is my decision if they can have five days [off] or three days, if it’s three days to rest, you cannot fly.”
“This is something that us, as a club, have to decide.”
When asked if Amorim would have taken a different approach, the manager responded: “For me? Yes for sure.
“We cannot put this on the players. They [United] told them they can have five days off so they can fly anywhere because nobody at the club says you cannot fly. So they have to live their lives and they have to decide these things because they’re grown men. But us as a club has to change on these standouts.”
