England are officially through to the Euro 2024 Final where they’ll be taking on a strong Spanish side.
Spain managed to book their ticket to the final with a 2-1 win over France thanks to teenager Lamine Yamal and United target Dani Olmo.
This win came on the back of the Spanish side knocking out the hosts, Germany, in the Quarter-Finals.
Meanwhile England defeated the Dutch in a dramatic fashion right on the full time mark.
A quick goal from Xavi Simmons saw the Netherlands take the lead before a Harry Kane penalty saw the two teams level again. The game remained a stalemate with a well worked Bakayo Saka goal deemed offside.
In the dying moments of the game, Gareth Southgate finally made some substitutions, bringing on Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins. Ten minutes later, a perfectly taken first touch by Watkins from a Palmer pass saw the Aston Villa striker slot home a beautiful cross-goal shot. This Impressive goal has launched the Three Lions into their second consecutive European Championship final.
Former United captain Roy Keane remained ever stoic despite the celebrations of his fellow ITV pundits Gary Neville and Ian Wright when Watkins’ shot hit the back of the net. Keane gave a sly smile and shifted slightly to the side while watching the replay of England’s historic moment from the studio balcony.
In an interview after the game, Watkins said: “I’ve been waiting for that moment for weeks. It’s taken a lot of hard work to get where I am today, grateful that I got the opportunity and I grabbed it with both hands. I’m delighted.”
He continued: “I swear on my life, I swear on my kids’ life, I said to Cole Palmer [who assisted the goal], we’re coming on and you’re going to set me up today. And that’s why I was so happy.
“I knew as soon as he got the ball he was going to play me and then you’ve got to be greedy: touch and finish. And when I seen it go in the bottom corner… oh my life. Best feeling ever.”
