Roy Keane is a true Manchester United legend having played for the Red Devils for 13 years, including wearing the captain’s armband across ten seasons.

The player-turned-pundit regularly comments on the state of the United squad and is regular feature for football in general for Sky Sports and ITV, helping to cover major tournaments like the recent Euro 2024.

In a recent interview with The Overlap, Keane discussed his predictions of United’s final league table position for next season following their recent signings.

Last season saw United’s worst finish since 1990 with the Red Devils coming eighth overall with a plague of injuries, having also crashed out of the Champions League group stage.

Roy Keane raises areas of concern for United

In his interview, the former United captain raised concerns around Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, as well as the lack of a midfield signing this summer.

Discussing these concerns, Keane said: “It’s always a worry for me about competing and I still worry about the spine of that Manchester United team,”

He continued: “For all the nice play they have and good players, I still worry about the goalkeeper and striker.

“On paper they have a decent squad, but the reality is when they’ve played games, and last year with their record in the league they were so open.

“If you’re on about competing, I worry about the spine of the team.”

Keane’s hopes and praises for the coming season

In the interview however, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. The former Republic of Ireland international actually praised one of United’s recent signings.

Speaking about the club’s purchase of Matthijs de Ligt, Keane said: “I think he will be a good signing,”

The centre-back brings a wealth of experience and ability to the United back line which Keane is hoping will support the club to better this season.

Speaking about United’s chances in the coming season, Keane said: “I fully expect United will do a lot better than last year,”

He added: “They can’t finish eighth again, can they? They can’t be that bad. But we are talking about fourth here.”
