Robin van Persie is a certified Manchester United legend.
Despite only joining United at the age of 29, he cemented his name in history when his goals led United to their record breaking 20th league win in the 2012-13 season. The hat-trick against Aston Villa, including the goal of the season volley from Wayne Rooney’s assist, confirmed the title and meant that the Red Devils were able to win another title in Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season in charge of the club. It remains, to today, the last league title won by the club.
Since retiring in 2019, van Persie has been in the world of coaching. He’s spent working his way up through the Feyenoord coaching system having had roles as the assistant head coach for the first team as well as co-head coach for their youth teams. And now van Persie has taken the step up and embarked on his own managerial career with his first appointment as head coach for a first team.
Staying in the Netherlands, van Persie has announced that he’s now the head coach of SC Herenveen. A legend in the Netherlands thanks to his goals for the national team, he’s set to take over a club who finished 10th in the Eredvisie this season. He will be taking over from current incumbent Kees van Wonderen.
Robin van Persie has built up quite the reputation as a coach in his short time since retiring and this move is seen as the next step in his evolution. He’s seen as a highly rated coach already and many fans from around the world, including Manchester United fans, will be keen to see how he does in the role.
Van Persie isn’t the first player from that league winning side at Manchester United to make the step to managerial role. His strike partner Wayne Rooney has already been manager of the likes of Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City while Ryan Giggs had a step in charge of the Wales national team.
