Robert Lewandowski and Rio Ferdinand discuss what might have been
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Lewandowski explained what might have been in the summer of 2012.
The striker was two seasons into his time with Dortmund, explaining: “I said yes to join Manchester United.”
When Ferdinand asked when this was, to Lewandowski’s confirmation of “2012”, the former defender was taken aback, responding: “I was there. Why didn’t you sign man?”
Lewandowski started to respond coyly, saying “Ask the club”. But when Ferdinand suggested the reason was wages, the Poland international explained all.
The striker commented: “I remember the conversation with the President of Dortmund. He said to me that they [Dortmund] need him and that they’re not going to sell me to Manchester United because I’m so important for them.”
Lewandowski explained that whilst he was happy at Dortmund, there was temptation, saying: “It was the prime of Manchester United”.
Ferdinand responded: “What a team we would have had man. Jesus”, clearly devastated about what might have been.
