After 99 days of the lockout imposed by the owners to the players in December last year, after the agreed time between MLB and MLBPA, the result was a happy ending, like a Hollywood movie, on Thursday, April 7, the Opening Day of the 2022 season of the best baseball in the world began with the Opening Day.
The tough negotiations left their mark on a damaged relationship between the players and Commissioner Rob Manfred, who has among his priorities to regain the support of those who see action every day in the ballparks in both the American League and the National League.
A fractured relationship between MLB and its players
In that vein, according to a report by Stephen J. Nesbitt of The Athletic, Manfred sent all the players a season starter kit, with a thank you letter, as well as state-of-the-art Bose headphones.
The wording of the letter is an acknowledgement of the importance of the players in the MLB business, an issue that the players themselves have questioned about this relationship, the lack of recognition of their working conditions.
“As we get ready to start a new season, I wanted to take a moment to send a note of appreciation,” Manfred wrote. “Being a Major Leaguer is an extraordinary accomplishment that beyond your remarkable talent shows your dedication to this great game. Along with our clubs, I’m committed to working together with all players to grow the sport. I’m excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and by working together, I know we can bring the game to new heights.”
Rob Manfred’s actions
This is not Manfred’s only action as he has already held face-to-face meetings with some players to discuss the proposed improvements and the inclusion of their feedback to bring them to fruition.
“Please accept this gift as a small gesture of my appreciation for the hard work that comes with being a Major Leaguer and your respect for our incredible fans. Thank you for everything you do in a game that has such a rich history and deep meaning to our fans in the U.S. and around the world. Wishing you the best of luck for a successful season.”
