The Rivers State University Alumni Association has announced plans to expand its student mentorship programme and strengthen its partnership with the Governor Siminalayi Fubara-led Rivers State Government.
The Chairman of the alumni’s Board of Trustees, Prof. Gladson Nwokah, disclosed this during a recent gathering of the university’s former students.
In his address, Prof. Nwokah reflected on the institution’s journey from its origins as the College of Science and Technology through its evolution to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, and finally to its current identity as Rivers State University.
“This progression not only marks our growth and adaptability but also highlights the unique challenges we have faced as an association,” Nwokah stated.
The alumni association, established in the 1980s, has been a driving force behind the university’s impact on society for nearly four decades.
According to Prof. Nwokah, the association remains committed to mentoring students to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional success by leveraging the vast experience of RSU alumni.
“To fulfill our collective goals, we are dedicated to connecting graduates and students through mentorship, professional development, engaging activities, and volunteer opportunities. We recognize the significant role government policies play in shaping societal progress and commit to engaging actively in policy dialogues,” he said.
Recognizing the importance of government policies in shaping societal progress, Prof. Nwokah added, “In our efforts, we remember and honour the selfless goals set forth by our founding members. It is now time to strengthen our partnership with the Rivers State Government, guided by the visionary leadership of our dynamic Governor. While remaining non-partisan, we aim to leverage our networks to support our mutual objectives.”
The gathering also served as a platform to discuss the university’s current situation and future plans.
Nwokah called on the alumni to support and contribute to the university’s development, saying “More so, our theme exposition will focus on galvanising the alumni community for impact, which aligns with our present problems and goals. This conversation will focus on our achievements and future potential through the prism of innovation and growth.”
The event featured awards and recognitions of alumni who have made significant contributions to their disciplines, supported the university, or shown selfless dedication to the association.
