The Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule, at its 47th Legislative Sitting of the Second Session of the Tenth Assembly, on Monday, called on the (NEMA) to Include the State in their flood response plan.
The lawmakers said they were deeply concerned about the impending flood and its possible negative impact on the people of the State, hence urging relevant government agencies to do the needful.
The appeal was made while resolving a Motion moved by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Dumle Maol.
Moving the Motion, Rt. Hon Maol stated that the anticipated flood is hinged on the information that the authorities of the Republic of Cameroon had notified the Nigerian government of their planned regulated release of water from the Lagdo Dam, following recent torrential rainfalls in the West and Central Africa; urging his Colleagues to resolve in the affirmative on the prayers of the Motion.
Members who debated on the Motion spoke in unison in support of the Motion, emphasizing the need to enlighten their constituents on the impending flood.
Commenting on the Prayers, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, averred that the prayers of the Motion are well intended, and mandated a Joint Committee of the House Committee on Environment and House Committee on Emergency Relief to liaise with NEMA, NDDC and other relevant Agencies of Government to see that adequate preparations are made against the imminent disaster, and ensure that succour is brought to would-be victims of the flood which has started making incursion into Rivers State coastal waters.
The Committee is expected to submit its Report to the House within a week.
Earlier, Rt. Hon. Amaewhule congratulated Members on their recent victory at the Federal High Court, Abuja, stating that the law would continue to speak in their favour despite the evil machinations of their traducers.
