Amad Diallo has quickly grown into a crucial player for Manchester United this season.
At just 22 years old, Diallo has shown no hesitation in showcasing his talent with standout performances this season.
The Ivorian is boosting his case to be one of Ruben Amorim’s first names on the team sheet.
Most recently, his decisive display in United’s dramatic derby win over Manchester City demonstrated his technical quality and composure.
Diallo won the penalty and, moments later, scored the winner – securing a memorable victory for United.
However, Rio Ferdinand has revealed there were serious doubts within the club when Diallo first arrived at Old Trafford.
United agreed to sign the Ivorian winger from Atalanta in late 2021 for an initial £19m, potentially rising to £37m.
Yet, as Ferdinand explained, not everyone was convinced the young talent was ready for the Premier League.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “Immediately it felt like, ‘not for us, not good enough.’
“People inside and outside the club were thinking, ‘too small, too lightweight, not dynamic or powerful enough for this league.’”
Ferdinand said Diallo has used those doubts as motivation: “My man has seen and heard that stuff and used it as fuel… Look at him now.
“The new manager’s come in, and I would go as far as to say he [Diallo] is the first name on the teamsheet for this manager.
“That’s a testament to this kid’s character.”
Ferdinand went on to praise Diallo’s determination to prove his doubters wrong, highlighting his work ethic and impact on games:
“With his performances he’s been saying, ‘I’m going to run, I’m going to work and then I’m going to make decisive, great decisions when I’ve got it, I’m going to impact the game.”
He added that while Diallo’s technical talent was never questioned, many failed to see his resilience and drive to succeed:
“I think he’s a real footballer. I don’t think that was ever in doubt, everyone could see the talent. But they just didn’t see the other side of him when you look at him.”
The future looks bright for Diallo, who will be aiming to stay injury-free and maintain his impressive form for the remainder of the season.
