History was made in Egypt as Al Ahly triumphed in the first-ever Women’s Cairo derby, defeating rivals Zamalek 2-1 in a thrilling match at Mit Okba.
The game marked the debut of both clubs’ women’s teams, created after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) required all clubs participating in CAF competitions to establish women’s teams.
Nigerian striker Charity Reuben was the hero for Al Ahly, making history by becoming the team’s first-ever goalscorer. Reuben struck twice, scoring in the 43rd and 74th minutes to secure the Reds’ victory.
Zamalek’s Sebstia Akwi also made history by becoming her club’s first-ever goalscorer. Akwi’s free-kick in the 92nd minute gave Zamalek a late consolation, but it wasn’t enough to deny Al Ahly the win.
The match also saw another milestone when Al Ahly’s Nora Khaled received the first red card in the history of the Women’s Cairo derby, being sent off in the 90th minute.
