The House of Representatives on Saturday condemned the killing of 16 travellers by an angry mob in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government of Edo State.
The Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi, in a statement in Abuja, said that such a horrific act was a grave violation of human rights and the rule of law.
He said the House acknowledged the directives of President Bola Tinubu, and the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo to security agencies to conduct an urgent investigation into the incident.
Rotimi urged law enforcement to fish out the perpetrators and prosecute them accordingly.
The spokesman commended security agencies for their swift and timely intervention, which led to the rescue of survivors and the arrest of some suspects.
Some persons suspected to be hunters were intercepted by members of a local vigilante group on suspicion that they were kidnappers in the Uromi community of Esan North Local Government Area of the state and killed on Thursday.
“It is deeply disturbing that in our nation, fellow citizens can be subjected to such heinous violence, especially when our faith traditions teach us to honour the sanctity of every human life,” the spokesman quoted the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, as saying in the statement.
