When the Cleveland Browns snapped a dismal streak of 17 seasons without making the playoffs in 2020, it looked like the future would be bright for quarterback Baker Mayfield‘s team, however, the 2021 season was disappointing as the team was never able to have consistency and finished tied for the bottom of the AFC North with an 8-9 record.
That’s why, according to a report from Mary Kay Caboy of Cleveland.com, the Browns are not ruling out any options and will explore all of them for the 2022 season when it comes to the quarterback position.
Will Baker Mayfield be the starter in 2022?
Most likely, it will be Mayfield who occupies the starting position for the beginning of the next campaign, however, the conflicts that led to the departure of receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and his low productivity make the team not rule out adding a veteran free agent, seeking a trade with another franchise or selecting a rookie for the next NFL Draft.
Currently, Mayfield is, according to the same report, ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation from a surgery he underwent in January to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, so he is expected to be 100% when training camps begin next summer.
Looking to retain Jarvis Landry
On the other hand, Cleveland is expected to make every effort to retain former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who after the departure of OBJ, has become Mayfield’s main weapon through the air.
This will be the last year of Mayfield’s rookie contract, so a good performance is vital for the quarterback, otherwise he may not be re-signed or will be offered a juicy renewal.
