The Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, Agbor, says it has withdrawn the query issued to Osatohemwen Edobor, one of its students, for posting a trending video of her colleagues rejecting First Lady Remi Tinubu as their ‘mother’.
THE WHISTLER reported that in the query, dated March 27, 2025, and signed by the provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, Edobor was accused of singing, recording, and circulating the video considered a “malicious act” and a punishable offence in the Student Handbook.
The incident occurred during the First Lady’s official visit to the Dome Event Center in Asaba, where she launched the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and distributed 10,000 professional kits to midwives.
In the video, the students rejected Mrs. Tinubu as their mother, singing “na your mama be this o eh” in response to the MC’s praise song.
The college had given Edobor 24 hours to respond to the query, which states: “It has come to the notice of the school authority that you, Student Nurse Osato Edobor… was found to be engage in malicious act of recording/singing and posting unofficial response to song during the arrival of the First Lady.”
A follow-up letter signed by the Provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne and written to Edobor on Friday reads: “The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, in his magnanimity, has directed the school authority to withdraw the query issued to you on the 27th March, 2025.
“You are therefore to return the query letter through the student affairs officer to the office of the provost. The school authority regrets any inconvenience this must have caused the state.”
THE WHISTLER gathered that the Delta State Government directed the immediate withdrawal of the query issued to the student.
In a statement on Friday via X, the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, confirmed the withdrawal of the disciplinary query, stressing that the government is committed to upholding the rights of students in health-related programmes and ensuring a conducive learning environment.
“The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, has directed the immediate withdrawal of the query issued to Nursing Student Osato Edobor by the Provost of the School of Nursing Sciences, Agbor,” the ministry said in a public notice.
Speaking further in a video statement, Onojaeme assured the public that the government had no intention of victimising any student over the incident.
“On the trending letter of query issued to the student of the School of Nursing, Agbor, I’ve instructed the provost to withdraw the letter. We don’t want to victimise any of the students,” he said.
The commissioner also revealed that he had personally reached out to the affected student to confirm the withdrawal of the disciplinary action.
“I’ve also reached out to the student in question, and the student has confirmed to me that the letter was withdrawn late yesterday night,” he stated.
Onojaeme urged the public to disregard any misinformation surrounding the issue, insisting that they have no intention to victimise the student.
