‘We have Infinity Stones at home!’
We are coming up on the seven year anniversary of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, and no, we’re not hear to continue to harp on the shoddy models, lack of mainstay characters, or developers’ disconnection with fans… we’re here to talk about eggs.
Outside Xtra released a video recalling seven of gaming’s absolute worst collector’s edition bundles, and as soon as we saw the title we were suspicious that a certain 2017 fighting game might make the list. Indeed, not only does Infinite have one of our genre’s worst reputations for the items listed above, it also disappointed the few fans who were willing to fork over more than three times the game’s standard price for extra goodies that weren’t so good.
If we zip back seven years the FGC is already extremely doubtful about Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, the beloved franchise’s fourth official MvC title. Fans were pessimistic, but there was so much momentum stemming from the undying hype sustained from both MvC2 and 3, that maybe things would come together once the game actually dropped on September 19.
As is the usual with larger releases these days, Capcom offered a collector’s edition that came with a few bonus items. Instead of just getting Infinite for $60, you could get a DLC season pass, diorama statues of Iron Man, Mega Man X, Captain Marvel, and Chun-Li, and six light up, LED Infinity Stones for $200.
We got to see what all these physical add-ons looked like via promotional material, but when collector’s editions shipped and fans opened up their Infinity Stone boxes, they found yet another reason to be disappointed with the Infinite experience.
What looked like beautiful gems in the promo material wound up looking more like opaque eggs in real life. Not only did these look like plastic toys as opposed to elaborate, reality-altering stones of ancient power, you couldn’t even remove them from the box.
When you turned them on you could see a little more topical detail, but these were much more than a stone’s throw away from what was promised. You can see all the details and hear all the particulars in the full video below.
The bit about Marvel Infinite begins at the 7:18 mark, but you’ll have fun recalling other terrible top shelf pre-orders with Outside Xtra, such as the unwearable Master Chief helmet from Halo 3 or the nightmare fuel Geralt of Rivia statue from Witcher 3.
Give the video a watch and then let us know in the comments if were one of the many disappointed MvC fans who got their hands on the Infinite eggs.
