Real Madrid icon Karim Benzema equals Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar records in Champions League semi-final victory over Manchester City

Karim Benzema has enjoyed an incredible season at Real Madrid – and he isn’t finished yet.

The Frenchman appears to be getting better and better with age and he has banged in 15 goals this year in the Champions League alone.

Prolific Benzema tops the Champions League goalscoring charts this season

He has scored ten in the knockout stage, bagging two hat-tricks, and has now matched one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s many Champions League records after scoring in Real’s incredible victory over Manchester City.

Manchester United forward Ronaldo once netted ten times in the knockout rounds while at Real.

And after stealing the show once again, he has now equaled Ronaldo’s record.

However, that isn’t the only record that Benzema matched against City as he became the fourth player in Champions League history to score in both legs of the quarter-finals and semi-finals in a season.

He has joined a list that includes Edin Dzeko (2017/18, Roma), Fernando Morientes (2003/04, Monaco) and Neymar (2014/15, Barcelona).

Therefore, Wednesday night turned into an historic evening for arguably one of the best strikers in the world at this moment in time.

Karim Benzema: What has been said?

Benzema is in such good form that he is being heavily tipped to win the Ballon d’Or.

After the first leg against City, his teammate Vinicius Jr picked Benzema out as the clear winner of FIFA’s most prestigious individual award, saying: “There are no words that can describe how Benzema plays. He deserves the Ballon d’Or.

“I hope my brother Benzema ends up winning La Liga, Champions League and Ballon d’Or.”

After Real’s win over Chelsea earlier this season, Rio Ferdinand said: “Karim Benzema, if they’re not engraving his name on the Ballon d’Or I’ll be surprised.

“He’s been magic. In the last tie, he was magnificent and grabbed a hat-trick. Tonight he’s done the same and got another hat-trick.

“This man made the difference. Yes, they got their tactics right with Vinicius [Junior] out on the right and pinning [Andreas] Christensen back.

“But, he put the chances away as they came and dispatched them beautifully. What a masterclass.”
