Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) was in tears on the House floor on Thursday as her fellow ‘Squad’ member Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was booted from the Foreign Affairs Committee.

“[You] censor Congresswoman Omar,” she railed. “In the same week, they introduced a bill to ban federal employees from engaging in censorship. Where are the free speech warriors today? The hypocrisy is obvious to the American people.”
“You are showing who you all are,” she went on after her time expired. “We will not be silenced.”
“Congresswoman Omar, I am so sorry that our country is failing you today through this chamber…”
She was cut off and was no longer recognized during her tirade about the House’s action against Omar. While the clip of Tlaib’s maudlin hysterics is sure to go viral on left-wing media, it is revealing who exactly she is defending in her rant.
The House on Thursday kicked Rep. Ilhan Omar off the Foreign Affairs Committee for her antisemitic and anti-Israel rhetoric.
Omar, a member of the far-left “Squad,” was given the boot in a party-line 218-211 vote. Omar came to the U.S. as a Somali refugee and was one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. She claimed she was being targeted by Republicans because she is an immigrant, a Black woman, and a Muslim.
“This debate today is about who is going to be an American,” Omar said in a floor speech before the vote. “There is an idea that you are suspect if you are an immigrant.”
However, Omar has made a number of inflammatory and highly questionable statements during her time in Congress that have irked both Republicans and Democrats.
In June 2021, she compared America and Israel to the murderous terrorist groups Hamas and the Taliban and said the two democracies have committed “unthinkable atrocities.”
“We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the U.S., Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban,” tweeted Omar. “I asked [Secretary of State Antony Blinken] where people are supposed to go for justice.”
The tweet caused even members of her own party to lash out against the unhinged rhetoric.

“Equating the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban is as offensive as it is misguided,” a group of Democrats said of Omar. The condemning statement was signed by Democratic representatives, including Brad Schneider (IL), Brad Sherman (CA), Josh Gottheimer (NJ),; Jake Auchincloss (MA), and Ted Deutch (FL).
Omar’s fellow “Squad”-member Tlaib, who has her own history of controversy, defended the tweet.
“Once again disappointed in my colleagues quicker to condemn [Omar] than they are to condemn the human rights abuses of the apartheid state of Israel,” Tlaib tweeted. “This statement purposefully distorts her words, stokes anti-Muslim hate toward my sister in service, and is unacceptable.”
Omar, for her part, bemoaned the negative coverage that she claimed “directly” incited death threats against her.
The Minnesota representative has repeatedly accused Israel of engaging in “terrorism” through defensive and retaliatory airstrikes that tragically killed civilians in the Gaza Strip.
“Israeli air strikes killing civilians in Gaza is an act of terrorism. Palestinians deserve protection. Unlike Israel, missile defense programs, such as Iron Dome, don’t exist to protect Palestinian civilians. It’s unconscionable to not condemn these attacks on the week of Eid,” Omar wrote on Twitter.
When she first came to office in 2019, she was quick to spread conspiracy theories about Israel’s influence on international affairs.
“Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel,” she wrote before deleting the tweet.
She later apologized and claimed her goal is “never to offend” her constituents or Jewish-Americans with her remarks.
“Anti-Semitism is real and I am grateful for Jewish allies and colleagues who are educating me on the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes,” Omar commented. “My intention is never to offend my constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole. We have to always be willing to step back and think through criticism, just as I expect people to hear me when others attack me for my identity. This is why I unequivocally apologize.”
“At the same time,” she added, “I reaffirm the problematic role of lobbyists in our politics, whether it be AIPAC, the [National Rifle Association] or the fossil fuel industry. It’s gone on too long and we must be willing to address it.”
One of her most incendiary remarks came when Omar was speaking at a Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) fundraiser in 2019 and she addressed the topic of the September 11th attacks.
“Here’s the truth: Far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen and, frankly, I’m tired of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it,” Omar said.
“CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something, and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties,” Omar continued, referencing an attack carried about Islamic terrorists that killed 3,000 Americans and led indirectly to two foreign wars.
Omar has also pushed the slanderous trope that Jewish Americans have ‘dual loyalty.’
“I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is OK for people to push for allegiance to a foreign country,” Omar said in 2019. “I want to ask why is it OK for me to talk about the influence of the NRA, of fossil fuel industries, or big pharma, and not talk about a powerful lobbying movement that is influencing policy.”
After pushback from within her party, Omar doubled down on her anti-Israeli narrative.
“I should not be expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country in order to serve my country in Congress,” Omar tweeted.
“I am told everyday that I am anti-American if I am not pro-Israel. I find that to be problematic and I am not alone. I just happen to be willing to speak up on it and open myself to attacks,” she continued.
“My Americanness is questioned by [then-President Trump] and the [GOP] on a daily basis, yet my colleagues remain silent,” she added. “I know what it means to be American and no one will ever tell me otherwise.”
Omar is free to share her opinions about Jews, Israel, and the 9/11 attacks whenever she wants. It is, after all, a free country. She will just have to do it somewhere else than the Foreign Affairs Committee.
