Boss characters are a staple of fighting games. Getting to the end of an arcade mode ladder and then putting together all the skills you’ve learned in order to overcome the ultimate, input-reading test.
Though there have been plenty of sub and hidden bosses, we’re taking a look at the franchise’s six biggest bad guys that set themselves apart as “bosses” and ordering them from worst to best.
What exactly does it mean to be a good boss in a fighting game? Street Fighter, in many ways, set the standard for this when they put together the now tried and true arcade mode.
We saw this in Street Fighter 1 when Sagat served as the final, overpowered opponent guarding the game’s credits sequence, but many specifically recall the days of facing off against M. Bison at the end of Street Fighter 2 as their first taste of boss battles.
If done well, a fighting game boss will almost instantly make you feel like you’re in over your head.
Their abilities tend to be over-tuned as they dole out ridiculous amounts of damage, often recover extremely quickly from even the hardest of attacks, and are known to garner special abilities that no other characters have.
Gill in Street Fighter 3, for instance, embodies a godlike, messiah figure who is clearly set apart from the rest of the roster. Defeat him while he has a full bar of meter and he’ll simply stand back up thanks to his Resurrection Super.
Finishing off one of these elevated characters should make you feel like you’ve really accomplished something and mastered the game you’re playing… at least in terms of solving AI puzzles.
We’ve taken the franchise’s six biggest bosses from over the last three decades and ranked them in terms of who best embodies the concept of fighting game boss.
