JUBA – Fresh protests have erupted at Dr. John Garang De Mabior Memorial University in Bor, the capital of Jonglei state, according to several students who said security forces have been deployed arresting students.

The protest first erupted on Tuesday morning before resuming this morning after the university administration decided to enforce a 2019 policy that aims at dismissing or forcing students who have failed their academic year to repeat class.

Speaking to Sudans Post this morning, one student who refused to be named said students have decided to take to the streets of the university because the administration decided to charge students made to repeat the exam with equivalent of a person who has not repeated the class.

“They charge us for the same money which is paid by someone who has not repeated his class and we have raised this issue with the administration but they don’t listen to what we have suggested by adjusting the fees,” he said.

“So, we decided to conduct protest and students are demanding what I have just told you and the administration decided to make the matter worse by bringing security forces and some students have been arrested,” he added.

Separately, Chol Achiek Deng, the deputy state police commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj this afternoon that they arrested the ringleaders of the protesting students at the university’s request in order to restore calm.

“After a tip-off by the university administration, we intervened arresting 5. In the investigation process, we released two. We are now left with only three,” he said.
