On September 15, 2024 BROOKLYN, New York – One police officer and three others were shot by the police as they attempted to take down a fare evader with a knife at a Brooklyn train station, on Sunday afternoon, cops said.
The incident was reported shortly after 3 p.m., after officers made contact with a suspected fare evader identified as 37-year-old Derrell Mickles at the L line station on Sutter Avenue
According to police officials, two bystanders were hit by gunfire during the altercation. A male was struck in the head and a woman was grazed in the leg. All were shot by police bullets, authorities said.
The wounded NYPD officer was hit on the left side of his upper torso just missing his vest and was rushed to Brookdale Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer was last listed in stable condition.
Police officials during a press conference said two officers on transit detail at the Sutter Ave. Subway station witnessed an individual walk through a gate without paying and confronted the man who then allegedly pulled a knife out of his pocket and threaten the officers.
Mickles then made his way to the train and after numerous commands, officers deployed their tasers which had no impact on the suspect.
Both cops then fired multiple rounds after the suspect allegedly lunged at one of the officers with a knife as a train arrived on the platform.
The wounded suspect shot multiple times in the chest was then handcuffed and also hospitalized following the incident, said NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey during a news conference.
