Project L now officially named 2XKO, projected game launch window revealed

After promising an update on the upcoming League of Legends fighting game yesterday, Project L (formerly), Riot Games has returned this morning and delivered. The company has gone ahead and announced the true, official name for the upcoming title.

What once was known as “Project L” is now officially entitled “2XKO.” The company behind the LoL fighter also released a new gameplay trailer to go along with the big name unveiling.

The new trailer begins with the name Project L strewn across the screen. Very shortly after it appears, the game’s swordsman Yasuo leaps into frame and slices the name in half (to symbolize that it is no longer going to be used).

We are then treated to about 45 seconds of all new gameplay. 2XKO features 2v2 battles between popular League of Legends champions, and this gameplay showcase provides a look at what several of the currently announced fighters are capable of.

The big talk of today is the game’s new name, however, and Riot Games explains that this new title is pronounced just as it’s spelled. To put that phonetically, it would be pronounced like “too-ex-kay-oh.”

In addition to the name change, the game’s official social media channels were also launched. You can now follow 2XKO on Twitter for the latest updates on the upcoming game, and at the time of writing this the official Twitter account already has a whopping 13,000 followers.

Riot Games has also released a follow up video that provides even more details on the new name and what’s to come for 2XKO. The title’s executive producer, Tom Cannon, provided an explanation for why they opted to change the project’s name.

“Here’s why we’re making the switch,” Cannon began. “This year, we’re entering a new phase of development. Our dev team has grown significantly since we last talked, and things are really ramping up.

“We still have a lot of game left to build, but we’re far enough along that it’s time to start sharing more with you over the coming year. Overall, we’re building an always evolving fighting game for the FGC, and there’s so much to be excited for.”

As far as what’s coming next, Cannon explains that the feedback they have received from fans about the game so far has been very helpful, and the development team aims to take that to the next level here in 2024. Playable demos will pop up in “a bunch of places around the world,” and Cannon also hints that we might be seeing other opportunities to try the game outside of major events including at-home play tests.

Right now, fans can go over to the 2XKO website and sign up for play testing. This sign up is specifically for upcoming play tests, so even if your email is already registered, you’ll have to sign up again to be considered.

Riot Games aims to launch 2XKO sometime in 2025. The game is slated to be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
