Press Release: NANS opposes sale of National Assets to meet up 2016 budget

BEING A PRESS STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE OFFICE OF PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER,  NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS NATIONAL SECRETARIAT) ON THE PURPORTED SALES OF NATIONAL ASSETS ON 26 SEPTEMBER 2016 —A CALL TO ECONOMY DISASTER.

NANS OPPOSE THE PROPOSED SALES OF NATIONAL ASSET TO MEET UP 2016 BUDGET.

With no idea of malice  compiled with maximum passion for the national development and economy dexterity, The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) which is the umbrella body of all Nigerian students schooling within and outside the country has noticed a foul play in the purported call for sales of national assets by the Federal Government and some self serving legislators/business predators who can not find any alternative means of enriching  themselves rather than to milk from deteriorating state of our economy now in recession.
''How can a mechanical engineer consider the sales of his workshop and tools as an alternative to his workshop challenges? ''

It will be recalled that successive regimes/administrations have done it in the past e.g Power Sector, NITEL e.t.c and the result is nothing but a parasitical attachment to the masses. Our refineries are part of the nascent in the world, if we can fix them and make it work at optimal capacity, it will definitely address the menace of fuel importation.
The Nigeria Liquefied and Natural Gas (NLNG) which is part of the suggested assets to be sold is a cooking pot that can provide more food to the nation if well maintained should not be disposed to meet short term needs.

The Federal Government should rather pay more attention to issues of diversification of the economy and immediately readdress our fiscal policy and be more sincere about patronage of made in Nigeria products by our political office holders not just paying a lip service to the campaign.

OUR STAND
– The National Association of Nigerian Students salutes the initiative of national orientation slogan ''CHANGE BEGIN WITH ME'' launched by  PRESIDENT MOHAMMAD BUHARI and also call on Mr President, Vice President, Governors, Ministers and other top political office holders to also allow  the change to  begin with them by sacrificing 50% of their salaries and allowances, that they should evolve an entrepreneurial based policies and programmes that ultimately addresses unemployment amongst Nigerian youths.
– The FGN should consider the state of emergency in the power sector in  order to address the inimical effect on power failure on national productivity and small scale businesses.
– A strong and productive ECONOMIC TEAM should be set up without the consideration of political affiliation or any ethno religious, tribal sentiments as we are blessed with capable hands than to be suffering from an avoidable economy imbroglio.
The FG should look inward for local solutions that basically address the problems rather than relying on pseudo economic advise from imperialists whose major interest is to plunge Nigeria further into debts.
– All political office holders and civil servant must lead by example in the patronage of Made in Nigeria Product and genuine attitudinal change must begin  from them by withdrawing there children from overseas to public schools in Nigeria.

NANS is left with no other option than to Pass a VOTE of NO CONFIDENCE on the CBN Governor, The Minister of Finance, Minister of Budget and National Planning. We demand their immediate resignation and urgent replacement with capable hands.

We call on the Presidency to inject the recovered looted funds into the economy to address infrastructural needs and growing unemployment. Demand the removal of educational institutions from the  SINGLE TREASURY ACCOUNT, reduction in CUSTOM levies, all this among others can be used to address the present economy recessions if we have a formidable economic team.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) call on international communities, Human Right Activists, Labour Unions and all concern stakeholders to as a matter of national development implore FGN not to subscribe to the satanic call for the sales of our cash cow (National Assets), Should the Federal Government concur to this un-holy proposition to sell off national assets, the general Nigerian students will not hesitate to shut down the economy totally until such obnoxious policy is reverted and we sincerely urge the FGN not to dare our ability.

''WE DON'T NEED A CENTURY TO EFFECT A CHANGE, ALL WE NEED IS EFFECTIVE PREPARATION TO PROVOKE UNUSUAL TRANSFORMATION''

The development of a nation lies in the collective contribution of all stakeholders. ''UBI JUS,UBI REMEDIUM” when there is wrong, there most be a remedy.
