It was just last Thursday that the Powerpuff Girls MultiVersus trailer dropped officially revealing Townsville’s protectors as the next newcomer headed to MV’s roster, and now we have a full guide from developers showing us how they’ll play.
The girls are effectively one character as all three fly and maneuver about synchronously, but they also have a special mechanic unlike any other in MultiVersus thus far. You can actually cycle through each girl being in the point position for the team, and doing so affords you various enhancements and potential strategies.
It’s not quite accurate to say that the Powerpuff Girls are three separate characters in one, though certain attacks do change a bit depending on who is out in front. The main difference is in stats as you can alter your speed and power in real time by cycling through Powerpuff points.
Community Manager for Player First Games, Nakat, begins the guide by explaining the “Sister Act” mechanic. Players can cycle through having Blossom, Bubbles, or Buttercup out in front simply by performing down special.
When Bubbles is out front, the trio enjoys a speed boost but loses a bit of knockback. When Buttercup is out front, the inverse is true as the girls move slower but have more powerful hits.
Blossom represents a middle ground between these two, and hopefully this mechanic winds up balanced in such a way that players tend to strategize around it based on opponents, arenas, and play styles.
If you’re facing a relatively slower tank character, for instance, maybe you want to spend the majority of your time with Bubbles out front so as to maximize maneuverability and wear them down.
If you’re dealing with a lighter opponent, perhaps Buttercup’s KO potential is the right energy as you try to overpower them with hard hits.
There’s a bit more to the variation between girls here, as the animation for certain moves (such as neutral special) changes based on point character. These still follow the same basic idea of speed vs power, but they also might send the opponent flying in different directions or set foes up for potential combos.
The Powerpuff Girls might represent the single most technical character MultiVersus has to offer yet, but we’ll let you be the judge of that after you watch Nakat’s wonderful introduction guide below:
MultiVersus Season 3 content begins rolling out on September 17, and Nubia will be joining sometime mid-season.
