The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s widening economic gap in his Christmas message on Tuesday.
The monarch noted that the situation contradicts the fundamental teachings of Jesus Christ.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Gbenga Ayoade, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, the traditional ruler lamented that the rich continue to amass wealth while the poor sink deeper into poverty.
He described the trend as antithetical to the reason for Christ’s birth.
Quoting him, “Let me use this period to felicitate with Christians all over the world and also urge them to emulate the virtues of Jesus Christ. The rich is getting richer while the poor is getting poorer, this is contrary to the reason for the birth of Jesus Christ.”
Olubade cautioned Nigerians to be security conscious as they journey for the festive season and observe road safety rules and regulations as they drive.
“I call on travelers during this period to avoid night journey, the drivers not to over speed, obey traffic rules and regulations and for the law enforcement agents to be alive to their responsibility in securing the lives and property of Nigerian people.
“Kabiyesi appreciates the support of Olubadan Advisory Council, Executive members of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, traditional title holders, Mogajis, Baales, the palace staff and the entire Indigenes and residents of Ibadan land, wishing them merry Christmas and happy new year in advance,” he added.
