On a cold afternoon in April 2015, Angelika Graswald and her fiancé, Vincent Viafore, took out kayaks and headed out on the Hudson River to a nearby island despite the wind and chilly temperature. After spending a few hours on the island, they got back in their boats and began the journey home. However, Viafore’s kayak started filling up with water and sinking. Viafore, who wasn’t wearing a life vest, fell in the water and ultimately drowned.
The water in the Hudson River was about 48 degrees.
Graswald was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. In November 2017, Graswald, who became dubbed the “Kayak Killer,” pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide and was sentenced to one to four and a half years in prison. She got out in December 2017 due to time served.
Do you think Graswald intended for Viafore to die? Or was she happy that he drowned?
