The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Cross River State Command, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, has paid a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state, emphasizing the importance of strategic collaboration between the police and the media in promoting peace and security.
Speaking during the visit, ASP Sunday described the media as a key stakeholder in law enforcement and community policing. He noted that it would be unwise for the police to sideline journalists, stressing that the success of policing efforts depends significantly on effective communication and partnership with the press.
He referred to journalists as colleagues in the fourth estate and called for mutual respect and professional engagement. According to him, since assuming office, the Command has prioritized timely and accurate dissemination of information to curb misinformation and prevent unnecessary panic.

ASP Sunday disclosed that a dedicated media platform was created to enhance coordination and ensure verified updates are promptly shared with journalists across the state. He expressed concern over the rise of unverified reports circulated by some online bloggers, noting that such misinformation often creates tension and undermines public confidence.
The Deputy PPRO, who accompanied him, appreciated the union for its support and reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to transparency and teamwork. He stated that the Public Relations Office operates collectively and that its effectiveness depends largely on collaboration with critical stakeholders, particularly the media.
In their response, NUJ leaders commended ASP Sunday for his proactiveness, professionalism and timely responses to security issues since taking office. They acknowledged noticeable improvements in communication between the Command and journalists and urged him to sustain the momentum.
The NUJ Chairman Comrade Archibong Bassey stressed the need for prompt responses to media inquiries, warning that delays often lead to speculation. He described the evolving relationship between the police and the media as a positive development and assured the Command of the union’s continued cooperation in the interest of public safety.
During an interactive session, journalists raised questions on ongoing investigations, including the arrest of a mortuary operator alleged to have preserved bodies under questionable circumstances. ASP Sunday clarified that the suspect remains in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department and that investigations are ongoing. He explained that preliminary findings indicate the bodies had been in the facility for several years following a change in ownership of the property. He assured that further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
Concerns were also raised about alleged security threats in parts of the state and reports of individuals in possession of firearms. The police spokesperson assured that the Command is making necessary inquiries and would provide follow up information where required.
Both the Police Command and the NUJ reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration as critical partners in peace building and nation building in Cross River State.
