Popular Cryptocurrency merchant, Linus Williams also known as Blord is being investigated over offences bordering on cryptocurrency fraud, non-compliance with regulatory frameworks and terrorism funding, the police have said.
The spokesperson of the police Force, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi disclosed that the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) is investigating complaints lodged against him.
Adejobi noted on Tuesday said that the FCID (NPF-NCCC) is also investigating the cryptocurrency billionaire over allegations of aiding internet fraud, and computer-related fraud.
The police said, “We will do due diligence in our investigations. Our cyber space in Nigeria must be safe and secured by all means. We are committed to achieving that.”
In February 2021, the Central Bank of Nigeria, described that cryptocurrencies have become well-suited for conducting many illegal activities including money laundering, terrorism financing, purchase of small arms and light weapons, and tax evasion.
The apex bank noted that the role of cryptocurrencies in the purchase of hard and illegal drugs on the darknet website called “Silk Road” is well known.
Then, a statement by the CBN Director, Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi noted that cryptocurrencies have been used to finance terror plots, further damaging its image as a legitimate means of exchange.
