Police commission promotes Magu to AIG, weeks to retirement

The Police Service Commision (PSC) has promoted a former acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commision (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police.

This was contained in a statement by the spokesperson of the PSC, Ikechukwu Ani, on Monday.

Mr Magu’s promotion comes few weeks to his retirement. He was promoted alongside many other senior officers of the force.

PREMIUM TIMES had reported how the former EFCC boss missed two previous promotions as the PSC said then that it needed clearance from Attorney-General Abubakar Malami

His last promotion was in 2018 when he was elevated to the rank of a full commissioner in the Police.

Mr Magu was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 to head the EFCC.

However, despite repeated nominations to the National Assembly, lawmakers declined to ratify his appointment. The president, however, kept him in the position until he was eventually replaced by the current chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

He was replaced after a judicial panel headed by retired President of the Court of Appeal, Ayo Salami, probed him for alleged corruption and insubordination. He denied the allegations and said he was being persecuted by Mr Malami.

The report of the investigation has yet to be made public.

Others promoted alongside Mr Magu to the rank of AIG are Abraham Egong Ayim; Okunlola Kola Kamaldeen; Andrew Amieengheme; Akeera Mohammed Younous; Celestine Amechi Elumelu; Ngozi Vivian Onadeko and Danladi Bitrus Lalas (Airwing).

Also promoted are John Amadi as a Deputy Inspector General of Police. He is to take over from late DIG Joseph Egbunike who represented South-east in the Police Management team

Also promoted to the rank of Commissioner were 23 Deputy Commissioners of Police.
